Ambroxol
What it is used for
Loosens thick phlegm so it is easier to cough up.
How it works
It thins thick mucus and helps the airways clear it, so coughing brings it up more easily. It also has a mild numbing effect on a sore throat.
How to take it
Adults usually take 30 mg two or three times a day after food, or as syrup. Drink plenty of water.
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Stomach upset
- Altered taste
- Numb mouth or throat
Get medical help straight away if
- Severe skin reaction (rare)
- Allergic swelling
Be careful
Stop and seek help if a skin rash appears.
Other medicines and interactions
Do not take with cough suppressants such as dextromethorphan or codeine for a wet cough, as mucus can build up.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Avoid in the first three months of pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.
Levosalbutamol
What it is used for
Opens up the airways to ease wheezing and tight chest.
How it works
The active half of salbutamol. It relaxes airway muscles to relieve wheeze and breathlessness.
How to take it
Inhaler or nebuliser as prescribed, usually when needed for symptoms. Tablets and syrups are less effective and cause more side effects than inhalers.
Common side effects
- Tremor
- Fast heartbeat
- Headache
- Muscle cramps
- Nervousness
Get medical help straight away if
- Breathing gets worse straight after using it
- Chest pain
- You need it more often than usual (asthma is getting worse)
Be careful
Can cause shaking hands or a fast heartbeat.
Other medicines and interactions
Beta blockers such as propranolol can block its effect. High doses with steroids, diuretics or theophylline can lower potassium.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Inhaled forms can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding; controlling asthma is important for the baby.
Guaifenesin
What it is used for
Helps bring up phlegm in a chesty cough.
How it works
An expectorant that is thought to make mucus thinner and more watery, so a chesty cough is more productive.

Adults usually take 200 to 400 mg every 4 hours as syrup or tablets. Drink plenty of fluids.
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
