Your medical costs in a year, and how to keep them down

Add the people in your family, their regular medicines and check-ups, and see what you spend on health in a year. Then see the everyday habits that prevent the most expensive problems.

A planning estimate, not medical advice. Never stop, skip or change a medicine to save money without your doctor: they know your health best. The ideas below are about staying healthy so that fewer problems start in the first place.

Who is in your family?

Tick any long-term condition someone has. For each person, enter what their regular medicines cost in a month (from your last bills) and how many times a year they see a doctor.

Other health costs for the family

The figures already filled in are only an example. Replace them with your own; your bills and insurance policy have the real numbers.

How this is worked out

Medicines = each person's monthly cost × 12. Doctor visits = visits a year × fee per visit. The other items are added as you entered them. The 10-year figure grows the yearly total by the price rise you chose, because medical prices usually rise faster than other prices.

Please talk to your doctor before changing your diet, exercise or medicines, especially if you have a long-term condition. Costs here are estimates for planning only. Tax rules and insurance terms change; check with a tax adviser and your insurer.
