What it is used for

How it works

A proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It switches off the acid pumps in the stomach lining, cutting acid by up to 90 percent, which lets ulcers and an inflamed food pipe heal.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed; ask your doctor.

Domperidone

Anti-nausea, gut motility

What it is used for

Reduces nausea and vomiting and helps the stomach empty, easing bloating.

How it works

It blocks dopamine in the gut and in the vomiting centre, so food moves through the stomach faster and nausea eases. Often paired with a PPI.

Other medicines and interactions

Do not combine with medicines that raise its level or affect heart rhythm: ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, ritonavir, amiodarone and some antipsychotics.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Avoid in pregnancy unless a doctor advises it. Passes into breast milk in small amounts; doctors sometimes prescribe it to boost milk, but only under supervision.
